At
Stanford’s Arrillaga Plaza, four-hundred children attended Kids Day. Entry
into the Kids Town Hall was by invitation only. The elementary school age
group came from all over the Bay Area in California to participate in the
tournament, matches, and a discussion panel. The discussion often focused on the challenges
and obstacles that come with the journey to success.
This
year’s panel included three competitors in this year’s doubles draw: Carly
Gullickson, Laura Granville, and Jill Craybas. The other panelists included Jim Otta (former
Oakland Raider), Bryant Young (former San Francisco 49er), and Don Johnson
(former number one doubles player on the tour).
The kids only function turned out to be a huge success because the
sponsors USTA Norcal and Round Table Pizza helped promote and develop the
growth of tennis in the region.
